David Goggins: How to Build Immense Inner Strength (youtube.com)

You have to build the person you want to be…in your mind. How would they conduct themselves? What drives them? What makes them tick? In order to become that person in real life, you first have to envision them in you.

Multiple voices.

In this podcast they talk a lot about having multiple voices in your head. Most of us only hear one throughout the day telling us what to do, steering us along. The problem is that the voice most of us are listening to is looking for the path of least resistance in life, the easy path, and that version of you is never going to achieve the things you aspire to do in life.

There’s another version of you though that want to get out. It’s the one that holds your hopes and dreams. The one that feels unfulfilled at the end of the day when you’re not actively moving towards those dreams. You need to learn what that side of you wants. It’s trying to talk to you. You just have to listen.

The person that you want to be is in you. It’s always been there, you just have to learn to fight the urge to suppress it. Fight the urge to take the easy route. I’ve learned that when that internal voice says it doesn’t want to do something, I probably need to do it. Ignore the voice that says you should quit. The one that says you’re not good enough. That you’ll never be the writer, or photographer, or athlete, or successful person you’re aspiring to be.

Develop the alternative. All of us have one, but we’ve learned to shut it down. It’s been vying for the light of expression for years but has always taken a back seat.

In order to start bringing that part of you into the fold though, you first have to recognize when the easy voice is trying to hold you back. Recognizing that when you tell yourself you’ve had enough, or that you’re too tired to work on that passion project, or when you give in to an urge that you know you shouldn’t, that that is just one version of you and it’s not the one that’s going to get you where you want to be. Learn to ignore it and move towards those things it fears most, hard work and discomfort.
